“Believe in Yourself”

Managing between studying, sports and other co-curricular activities seem to be a cupcake for some students. One of the toppers of Secunderabad Public School, Hyderabad, Sailab Swarnim of class X who is also heavily into various sports like Cricket, Basketball, Volleyball, Table Tennis and Badminton speaks with Next Gurukul about his techniques for multitasking and how he copes-up when stressed out.

Q. How do you cope with the building pressure from parents, teachers and schools, in this growing competitive world?

I would not say it is pressure which I feel, but rather take it as their expectations from me. If a student is excelling, people around him like parents, teachers and his principal will undoubtedly expect him to reach the top, because they know He Can. It is very clear in my mind that I have to live up to their expectations and keep their faith in me by giving my best shot. Hence, I study not under pressure but as a responsibility of not letting down their trust in me. Every student should think likewise.

Q. The CBSE Board has recently introduced subjects like entrepreneurship, hotel management, home science in class 11th. Is this a healthy step?

Absolutely. Launching subjects especially like hotel management and entrepreneurship help students understand their interest at an early age. Instead of recognizing one’s interest after school in the real world, we have the opportunities to taste them while in school itself. I say, never be afraid of new subjects and think they might increase study pressure. These subjects are for us, to help us know ourselves and our skills set better and early before stepping out of the protected school premises.

Q. You are also a musician apart from being into sports. Does multitasking hamper studies?

Not at all. I play various musical instruments like guitar, harmonium, drums, keyboard and congo, because I like music. I strongly suggest that while being students, we must learn at least one musical instrument. Music is definitely for the soul, it helps being a stress buster and a friend too. I suggest opt for one; you will enjoy studying more as you will always be calm. Make sure that stress buster only does as the name says, and not dominates your studies.

Q. How do you prepare for your exams, any special techniques?

There is no special technique as such for exam preparation. I primarily concentrate in my classes so that I can put my time in other activities I enjoy when at home. Paying absolute attention in class leaves me with simply revising at home as self-studying. Trust me, if you give your 100% in school, you will never require slogging yourself at home and simple revision of the classwork will be enough. This way you can easily manage multitasking.

Q. Any tips for fellow students?

Discover Yourself. Look around, you will find umpteen numbers of things to be curious about. Find out what you like and move towards it. If it is not academic, then take studying as something equally important to shape your future which has to be given the best shot. Don’t believe in what others say, except those who matter to you. Lastly, Believe in Yourself.
