Redefining the new-age assessment approach with adaptive assessments

The Indian education system has always emphasised on a generalised approach to assessments, but times have changed and 21st century India has witnessed a lot of transformation in the education sector ranging from digital classrooms, e-learning platforms to personalised learning and assessment. Among other technology-driven education solutions, the idea of personalised assessments is gradually being accepted in India to assess and evaluate students’ academic performance. While it is still a nascent stage in India, the idea of adaptive assessments is quite popular in the US and Europe.

Adaptive assessments

Adaptive assessment is an artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML)-based online test. The computerised-based test starts with questions of medium difficulty. Based on the response by the student, the difficulty level of the questions is either increased or decreased. These tests are designed in such a way that they stop when a certain level of score precision or psychometric degree is achieved.

Personalised evaluation approach to support student outcome

The one-size-fits-all method of assessment is not suitable for students with varied learning abilities. Static assessments following a one-size-fits-all approach offer a fixed set of questions to all students, irrespective of their learning abilities.  For example, below-average and average-performing students might not be able to achieve a set benchmark and those performing exceptionally well will find it difficult to challenge their abilities. In such a scenario, adaptive assessments ensure that students are tested based on their intellect and level of understanding. Lower-performing students are not discouraged by tough questions and high-performing students are not bored by too easy questions.

Adaptive assessments have many advantages. Given below is a closer look at how it is beneficial in today’s teaching-learning environment.

Advantages for students

Facilitates easy identification of learning gaps: Adaptive assessments provide students with questions based on their knowledge and understanding. With the help of detailed reports and analytics, a student’s academic progress can be measured thoroughly with a clear picture of strengths and weaknesses.

Since these tests are administered on a computer/ laptop, accurate data of every student’s learning can be easily generated, whereas it is a tedious and time-consuming process in static assessments.

Fosters focussed and self-learning: Once a student identifies his/ her weaker areas based on the adaptive assessment reports, he or she can focus more on those areas and take necessary remedial action to strengthen them. Also, in some cases, teachers themselves can check the reports and assign personalised remedial measures to help students build their learning journey. All these foster a focussed approach to academics as well as inculcate self-learning in students.

Advantages for teachers

Provides detailed and actionable performance reports: Adaptive assessment reports enable teachers to analyse class-wise and student-wise performance by leveraging system-generated reports. It also gives them a clear picture of every student’s performance and helps identify the learning gaps. Moreover, it also helps teachers easily compare students’ scores based on previously recorded statistics.

Reduces the time and effort of teachers: Since the adaptive assessments are powered by artificial intelligence (AI), it eliminates the need to manually analyse every student’s performance. The system-generated reports provide accurate insights into every student’s performance, which if done manually is a strenuous task. Therefore, adaptive assessments significantly reduce time and cost for schools while also providing the best learning experience to students.

Promotes hassle-free creation and evaluation of assessments: Since adaptive assessment is based on artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), it helps teachers stay relaxed as test creation and evaluation is no longer a tedious and time-consuming process. Also, this increases fairness in grading and performance measurement.
Undoubtedly, adaptive assessments streamline the process of assessment and evaluation of students and empower teachers to measure the disparities in learning and bridge the gaps easily. In line with this ideology, we, at Next Education, have a state-of-the-art adaptive assessment platform that meets every student’s learning needs and provides 21st-century education.
