NEET

About NEET

Previously known as the All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT), the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

Along with the AIIMS MBBS entrance exam, which the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi conducts, it is one of the most important national-level medical entrance exams in India. All government dental and medical colleges across the country reserve 15% of the seats under the all-India quota for NEET. The remaining 85% of the seats fall under the state quota.

The CBSE conducts the exam, declares the results and provides the All India rank list to the Directorate General Health Services, Government of India, so that counselling for the 15% all-India quota seats can be conducted. The results are also supplied to the various state counselling authorities.

Counselling for the 15% all-India quota seats is conducted online by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) based on the NEET results. Counselling for the 85% state quota seats is conducted by the Directorate of Medical Education of each state.

The Directorate of Medical Education also conducts counselling for private colleges, deemed universities, minority educational institutions and central universities based on the NEET merit list. However, institutions, such as JIPMER Puducherry and AIIMS, that have been established through an Act of Parliament do not participate in NEET.

Examination pattern for NEET

The NEET exam is generally conducted in the month of May every year. The duration of the exam is 3 hours. There is only one question paper, which comprises 180 multiple choice questions. The examinees have 4 options to choose from for each question, out of which only one is the correct answer. There are:

  • 45 questions from Botany
  • 45 questions from Zoology
  • 45 questions from Chemistry
  • 45 questions from Physics

Each correct answer carries 4 marks, whereas 1 mark is deducted for every wrong answer or for choosing more than one option as an answer.

The answers have to be marked on a sheet, which is machine-gradable, using a ballpoint pen. The test booklet can be used to carry out any rough work, while no other writings are allowed on the NEET answer sheet.

Maximum marks 720

Sections Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology
Total no. of questions 180 (45 in Physics, 45 in Chemistry, 45 in Botany, 45 in Zoology)
Marks awarded for each correct answer 4
