What is STEAM education?
In order to keep up with the generation of post-millennials, schools are now in a quest for fresh, intuitive, discovery-based, challenging educational environments. This has created inroads for STEAM education into our new-age classrooms.
What is STEAM education?
STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. It is an experimental form of learning that is more focused on building skills in students and providing a deep conceptual understanding through teaching two or more of the mentioned subjects together.
Here is how STEAM is intended to change the Indian education system:
1. Focus on skill-based education: STEAM education enables students to learn how to build skills which are used in real life. It promotes activities that arouse the natural curiosity of the student and provides a more personalised learning experience.
2. Works for both interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary models: STEAM education works for both inter- and transdisciplinary models and can be applied as an umbrella methodology in any board. Today, schools are in search of in-classroom innovations, such as STEAM lab set-ups or AI-based curriculum integrated with STEAM education as an in-curriculum program.
3. Educators versus Teachers: Educators play an important role in STEAM education as architects of experiential learning. Unlike teachers, educators are not just sources of knowledge, but they also create a space for open, creative and experiential learning.
4. Innovation as an evaluation parameter: STEAM or experiential learning methodology makes the evaluation process transparent and facilitates self-discovery in students. The biggest advantage of STEAM is that it enables children to build solutions with tangible outcomes.
STEAM provides students with robotics, artificial intelligence, coding, laser & 3D printers and various other tech solutions at their disposal to help them create, innovate and implement. This enables learning via innovation, rather than a set of instructions.
