Recess Should Never Be Withheld as Punishment
One of the reasons why Finnish education has reached the pinnacle of success through learner-centric education is by allowing students time for their own interests via longer recess hours. Recess is, according to the principles of the Finnish education system, necessary for their social and emotional development.
Schools around the world must also realise that recess is a right and not a privilege that they extend to students. In a lot of schools, students are punished by taking off their recess time; but it can never be good for the students because it is taking their chance at social-emotional learning.
Recess is also a time to work off the rigours of classroom learning. It offers the opportunity to manage the stress of adjusting to the nuances of the complex school environment. All in all, recess has a lot of advantages for the cognitive, social-emotional and physical development.
