Punjab to merge primary schools that have less than 20 students

The education department in Punjab is going to merge government primary schools with less than 20 students. It will merge these schools with other government schools located within a kilometre.
However, the department will not merge the schools if there are no other government schools within a kilometre.
The Punjab government wants to ensure that no student has to travel farther than one kilometre to reach a primary school.
The government has also directed that pre-primary classes should begin in government schools.
