Kerala school to recreate Dandi March on Gandhi Jayanti
The historic Dandi March undertook by Gandhiji and his followers will be recreated in a school of Kerala’s Malappuram district. Sullamussalam Oriental Higher Secondary School of Areekode is planning to organise a march from the MSP camp premises at Areekode to the Thazhathangadi beach to mark the 150th birth anniversary of the ‘Father of the Nation’ on 2 October.
According to a press release from the school, Gandhian Dr Chacha Sivarajan will dress up as Mahatma Gandhi. The students will wear costumes similar to the characters who volunteered in the Dandi March with Gandhiji, and hundreds of people will accompany them. In a symbolic act, the participants of the march will make salt out of seawater and announce the Civil Disobedience plan.
“Today, when the clouds of disunity and distrust are spreading out the darkness in the society, Gandhi’s life becomes more relevant,” says the press release from the school.
The Dandi March is a major event in India’s freedom struggle. On 12 March 1930, Mahatma Gandhi embarked on the historic march from Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad to the village of Dandi in the state’s coastal region to protest against the steep tax the British levied on salt. The non-violent Dandi March is historically significant as it led to the mass Civil Disobedience Movement.
