Italy to become the first country to adopt a climate change curriculum

Italy will become the first country to adopt a climate change curriculum in public schools. This decision comes in the wake of 11,000 scientists officially declaring a ‘climate emergency’. They have conjointly voiced this concern because climate change is accelerating faster than was expected.

Lorenzo Fioramonti, Italy’s Education Minister, is of the opinion that the environment and the society should be placed at the centre of the education model currently followed in Italy. Keeping this in mind, a group of environmental experts will help the ministry design a curriculum with different approaches for different grades. The curriculum for elementary-aged students will employ a fairy-tale model that will help them connect the environment to stories from different cultures. For children who are in middle and high schools, the curriculum will comprise technical information and focus on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development set by the United Nations. He further stated that traditional subjects such as geography, mathematics and physics will include lessons on sustainable development.
