Edutopia conducts a survey on trauma-induced education in a school in Nashville

In an attempt to popularise various methods of social and emotional learning, Edutopia had filmed trauma-informed practices at Fall-Hamilton Elementary School in Nashville back in 2017. After two years, they conducted a survey on the changes brought about by such practices in the school.

The Principal, Mathew Portell, discusses how trauma-informed education is a journey, and not a checklist of success stories. He shared the stories of how the school has built the multi-tiered systems of supporting kids on the academic and social-emotional levels. According to him, trauma-informed practices require a mindset shift, and transparency is the key to achieving a long-term impact in fighting the effects of trauma.

All children are affected by some kind of trauma; it manifests in children in different ways. It is important to know their stories in order to truly heal them, says Mr Portell.
