Activating Learners in a Student-Centered Classroom

All of us sat through lectures where teachers go on speaking without much scope for interactions among students. This drains the teacher and demotivates students, making the sessions a waste in terms of teaching-learning productivity.

Passive learning contributes to the basic levels of Bloom’s taxonomy, that is, knowledge and comprehension, but important skills such as application, analysis and evaluation remains underdeveloped. Therefore, it is necessary to change the scenario to one where students learn via their own initiatives; and it is through struggle that they will be better learners.

Casey Fletcher, an environmental science teacher at the Springfield Renaissance School in Massachusetts, explains how moving away from the lecture-mode classroom led to more engaged students – students who think, ask questions and experiment to reach high levels of understanding of concepts.
