Do Justice With Your Job
Ms. Sravanthi Tatabhatla, a teacher from 3 years, is now teaching Maths to classes 6, 7 and 8 in Secunderabad Public School. She shares some tips and techniques on how to teache and manage the techno prone students with Next Gurukul.
Q. How do you use smart classes to benefit your teaching style?
The combination of smart classes and the traditional textbook way of teaching has proved to take both teaching and learning a step ahead. Smart classes have benefited especially the average and below average students as they are now always attentive and mentally present during the classes. I often pause the session and ask questions to the class, to know how much has been taken in. Surely the bright students would raise hand to answer, but I most of the times ask students who feel shy in answering or are slow in understanding.
If I see a student hasn’t understood the concept I give him examples immediately by browsing the internet to help him understand. Instead of explaining him through the same example as in the book or in the digital content, I try to explain taking another example. This is like paraphrasing or taking a different route for explanation.
Q. How do you ensure that the conecpt has been understood?
As far as maths is concerned, the only way to know this is to give them sufficient homework. At times, there are concepts which are not easily understood; I hence try to relate such concepts with real world examples, to make it easy in grasping. I sometimes even give students number riddles and questions, to help work upon their I.Q. level. Do check thier homework and make sure you give feedback.
Q. What qualities a new-age teacher should possess? Any suggestions for them?
Every teacher should always have patience when dealing with children irrespective of her age or students’ age. One should have good communication skills as well, so that you are easily understood by the students. If communication skills would not be effective, students might not even understand the easy concepts.
Do justice with you whatever you do and remember that you responsible for many children’ future. Every child has something to learn from, understand his caliber and explain him things accordingly. Like every teacher has different teaching style, similarly every student has his own learning style and capacity. Be friendly with the students, but up to a certain limit. Counsel students if and when required, it really helps.
Q. Advice for students and parents?
Student: Concentrate in class, you will learn and understand more rather than taking up concepts at home. When attentive in class, just a quick revision session at home will be sufficient to drill the concept in your brain.
Parent: Pay attention to what your child is doing and what’s being taught at school. Your child needs your time, more than the gadgets and anything in the world. You might be buying them monetary happiness, yes, but are losing on the personal touch with your child.
