Private school teachers will soon get maternity leaves with a salary in Kerala

In terms of reforming a system, Kerala is always up for setting great examples. In a first in the country, Kerala is all set to bring thousands of employees of the private education sector under the ambit of Maternity Benefit Act. With the help of this Act, private school teachers will also get maternity benefits.

This year, on 29 August, the state cabinet had decided to seek the permission of the Central government to issue the notification considering the plight of the private sector employees. Recently, the central government gave a nod to the state’s request to issue the notification to extend the benefits of the Act to the employees of the private education institutions including the unaided sector.

With this initiative, thousands of employees in the private education sector will be able to avail 26 weeks of maternity leave with a guaranteed salary, just like government employees.

According to the source, the employer needs to pay ₹ 1,000 to meet their medical expenses.
