How to improve your reading skills
If you hone up your reading skills, it will help you reduce your reading time and increase your concentration level at the time of reading. Further, improved reading skills lead to a better understanding of the subject. Several studies have revealed that while studying, students mainly read to memorize. This practice; however, is not much effective, as students usually do not get the gist of the subject while following this method.
Use the following tips to improve your reading skills.
- Set your reading goals: Set your reading goals; it will enhance your reading efficiency. While preparing for your examinations, this tactic is quite useful. With this method, you can identify and prioritize all details that are relevant to your study. Apart from your day-to-day study, follow this method while preparing projects, presentations and reports. It will ease up your job.
- Reading with an eye for detail: After setting up your reading goals, give your undivided attention to the text you are reading. One effective reading tactic is to read all large fonts, such as headlines and names, first. Gradually, move to the main text.
- Say no to skimming and scanning: There is a difference between skimming/scanning and reading. Stop rushing; rather pay full attention to each word and get a better understanding of the text you are reading. Further, detailed reading will help you take notes and underline/highlight all important parts of the text.
- Concentration is the key: Full concentration on your study holds the key to boosting your reading speed. While reading, use a pointer (it can be a pen, pencil or any sharp object) to navigate your eyes through the text. This way, you can focus on every sentence and maintain your concentration level.
