Celebrating London Bridge

If you didn’t know this, the gaily rhyme London Bridge Is Falling Down carries with it a medieval charm. London Bridge is a famous landmark of London and the history of it is more than 600 years old. It was first built with wood and clay. Soon natural disasters struck and Viking invaders destroyed the bridge completely.

By 19th century, a stone-arched bridge was built. Later, this gave way to a steel and concrete bridge. The rhyme talks about the development. This melody, as we popularly know it today, was recorded in the late 19th century.

The area around the bridge was buzzing with activity since the medieval times. The bridge was an engineering marvel in the 1200’s and people built multi-story buildings in the vicinity. People set up business in the bottom floors of the buildings while the upper floors became the most coveted spots to live in in medieval London.

The song game, say some, resembles arch games of the Middle Ages. Interestingly, this piece of musical literature is sung in different versions depending on the local culture.

This animation is perfect for children who are still opening up to the world around as it has innocent sweet-looking character and soothing colourful visuals.
