India to name 20 varsities as Institutes of Eminence
In an attempt to help national higher educational institutions reach global standards in teaching and learning, the University Grants Commission intends to name 20 universities, 10 public and 10 private, the status of Institute of Eminence.
The IITs at Bombay and Delhi and IISc Bengaluru have already been declared so, along with 3 private institutes – BITS Pilani, Rajasthan, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, and Jio Institute (Reliance Foundation, Maharashtra).
Institutes under consideration include premier universities such as IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, Delhi University, University of Hyderabad, Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi, and VIT Vellore, Tamil Nadu.
Some of the characteristics expected of the IoEs in return for additional funding are highly qualified faculty, with the freedom to hire from across the world, the existence of academic, administrative and financial autonomy, excellence in research, high quality of teaching, high levels of funding etc.
