Teacher’s role in promoting classroom-based collaborative learning

For middle and high school students, collaborative or group learning is believed to be better than individual learning. When students study in a group, they discuss a subject/topic among themselves. Such a discussion provides more insights into the subject/topic, resulting in more clarity and a better understanding of the subject and a higher retention of knowledge.

A research done by Webb has revealed that when students work in collaboration on any math computational problem, they tend to score higher than those who work individually. Besides, it is found that mediocre students score well in examinations if they study in a group.

The collaborative learning method can also be followed in our classroom. Here are some ideas on classroom-based collaborative learning that teachers can consider.

  • To ensure effective collaborative learning in the classroom, the teacher needs to assign each group a goal to work on. It will motivate the group to the task, thereby establishing individual accountability.
  • When it comes to collaborative learning in the classroom, the size of group holds importance. While small groups (2 persons) mar the basic purpose of group learning, very large groups may create chaos instead of any collaborative outcome. Therefore, the teacher must decide the number of group members.
  • Trust and open communication among group members hold the key to successful collaborative learning. Being a teacher, you should address various interpersonal issues among group members promptly. Besides, make sure that each group member is able to communicate with other members and convey his/her message clearly.
  • Finally, the teacher will conduct various group-based assessments and tests in order to measure the outcome of collaborative learning in the classroom. Such tests or assessments can happen through group discussions, group activities, among others. It will ultimately ensure that learning is happening among all the group members.
