Bihar School Accepts Plastic Waste As Fees, Provides Free Books and Meals!

In a one-of-its-kind initiative by Manoranjan Prasad Samdarsi, the founder of Padampani School in Gaya’s Sevabigha village, students of the school can avail free education as well as free books, stationery, uniforms and even meals in exchange for collecting and disposing of plastic waste near the campus.

According to Mr Samdarsi, the village is not very environment-conscious, and the unpaved road to the school was riddled with plastic waste, which led to the place become a breeding ground for contagious diseases in the monsoons. Neither the village administration nor the villagers were of help, so he decided to give the incentive to the aspiring learners.

In spite of some initial resistance to the idea, the students understood the importance of such eco-friendly behaviour and took up the job enthusiastically. They collect the waste and segregate it into recyclable and non-recyclable waste, which is accordingly sent for treatment and disposal to waste management plants.

They have also planted over two thousand saplings along the same road. They water the saplings daily while coming to school, and they plant to plant five thousand saplings in the local villages by 2021.
