All-girls Robotics Team Heads to Robot Olympics in Dubai
‘Geared-Up Girls’, an all-girls robotics team based in Mumbai, will be representing the country in FIRST Global Challenge, an international competition in Dubai. The team of five girls, motivated and powered up to display their knowledge and projects, will be flying to Dubai for the event that will be held between 24 and 27 October.
The theme for the FIRST Global Challenge is ‘Ocean opportunities’ and will focus on dealing with ocean pollution that negatively impacts marine life and global populations. Around 2000 other students from 193 countries between the ages of 14 and 18 will be participating in the event at Dubai. The task for these teams is to figure out a way to apply their passion for robotics to build solutions for ocean pollution.
The team of five comprising Aarushi Shah, Radhika Sekhsaria, Aayushi Nainan, Jasmehar Kochhar and Lavanya Iyeris share an unbridled passion for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) and spend most of their after-school hours building robots. They have also been learning to apply the principles of mathematics and science in real-life scenarios to build robots. Besides this, the team also works towards the goal of addressing the diminished gender ratio in STEM courses in India by raising awareness of the need for more and more girls to enter the field.
