CBSE issues guidelines for safe information technology use in schools

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued guidelines and standards for information technology use. CBSE aims to give the students who use information technology a safe environment. The board has asked schools to monitor and control how students use electronic devices to protect them against fraud or bullying. It has issued a circular containing a series of steps for schools to create a secure environment for the students.

The guidelines

• CBSE has advised schools to install monitoring mechanisms such as firewalls, so as to control internet access.
• It has also told schools to teach children how to use the internet in a safe way.
• The board has suggested that schools use CCTV cameras so that children use the internet in highly visible areas.
• CBSE wants students be able to only access websites suitable for their age.
• CBSE has recommended action against students who breach copyright laws or use unlicenced software.
• It has advised schools to not allow students to carry communication devices without permission.
• The board has asked schools to make a basic mobile phone available in every school bus.
