Do you want a focused child? Read on…
These days, it is quite challenging for parents to raise focused children. kids are now growing up amidst lots of distractions. Therefore, most of the children face difficulty focusing on their daily routines/activities. Being parents, you can help your child be more focused. The following tips may come in handy for you.
Build your kid’s attention
Attention comprises three different skills–awareness, executive attention (decision-making and planning skills), and focus. Not surprisingly, it is possible to teach kids attention. Help your child get a better understanding of attention and help him/her practice it on a regular basis. You may be baffled thinking how to practice attention. It is very easy to practice. The internet is flooded with various attention-building games, exercises and activities. Encourage your kid to participate in such games, exercises and activities.
Joint attention
Joint attention can do wonders in enhancing your kid’s focus and concentration. The term refers to the meeting of minds at the time of focusing on a subject/topic together. While talking or discussing something with your kid, give your undivided attention to the conversation/discussion. It will help you set an example of how to pay attention to a subject/topic for your kid.
Avoid multitasking at this age
Multitasking is considered a good trait for any person. However, several studies have revealed that multitasking does not yield any benefits for kids. It has been found that when kids juggle multiple tasks, it ultimately slows them down, as their brain takes time to shift from one task to another. Besides, for kids, multitasking acts as a major deterrent to deeper and flexible learning. So, if you want your kid to be more focused, avoid involving him/her into multiple tasks at the same time.
Less exposure to TV, Internet and Video games
Apart from improving your kid’s attention, you should also create an appropriate environment at your home that will help him/her focus better. These days, most of the kids spend almost six to seven hours watching TV, surfing the internet and playing video games. Such a prolonged exposure to these non-print media results in attention difficulties. So, being parents, you should cut down the time your kid spend on these activities. Instead, encourage him/her to read good books, write poems or diary, or listen to soothing music.
Be your kid’s role model
To raise a focused kid, you should be his/her role model. Do remember that children emulate their parents blindly. So, if you are focused, your kid will automatically pick up the trait. At times, when you spend time with your kid, you can guide him/her how to focus or pay full attention to the task undertaken by him/her, how to avoid distractions, how to concentrate and so on.
