Daniel Jay Goleman, an author, psychologist, and science journalist, has propagated the concept of EQ, which signifies the human ability to comprehend, manage, regulate and use various emotions. EQ plays a significant role in developing a child’s ability to better manage his/her feelings and emotions, ups and downs in life, and interpersonal relationships. And when a child is taught how to manage his/her overwhelming feelings, including fear, anger, stress, confusion and frustration, it leads to the development of his/her emotional intelligence quotient, popularly known as emotional IQ.

The following characteristics are quite common in kids with higher EQ:

Better self-awareness: Usually, kids with higher EQ are well aware of their emotions and feelings.

Managing mood swings: These children are well-equipped to manage their feelings and mood swings. So, they are less likely to show tantrums and react aggressively.

Higher motivation level: They are better motivated to their goals and therefore, less prone to self-doubt, impulsiveness and other such factors.

Empathy: Higher EQ enables children to be more empathetic to other people.

Good at relationships: These children are more capable of managing their interpersonal relationships, resolving conflicts in a better way and interacting with others in a proper manner.

The onus is on parents to develop and nurture their children’s emotional IQ. The following tips may come in handy for parents.

Be an empathetic listener: Allow your kids to express their feelings whenever possible. Be an empathetic listener every time and always try your best to help them cope with all negative feelings. You can cite examples so that they can understand how to handle their emotions.

Teach them to say no to tantrums: Kids tend to throw tantrums for various reasons; it can be big or small. It is parents’ responsibility to enable kids to do away with this habit. Try to talk to them through emotions and help them think rationally. Soon, you will see an improvement in their behavior.

Nurture their problem-solving skills: Your kids may face various problems in their day-to-day lives. Being parents, you should teach them how to solve such problems on their own rather than complaining and nagging. Help them be logical and make rational decisions.

Practice what you preach: Last but not the least, you should check your behavior while dealing with your kids. Do remember that your children idolize you and they follow you every time.

According to several studies, most of errant children lack a skill known as emotional intelligence (EQ).
